1. Asbestos Remediation and Clean up in Aboriginal Communities and Remote Locations 

The NSW EPA will give an overview of some of the challenges of asbestos remediation in discrete Aboriginal communities.

Sally Bowers

Sally Bowers - Senior Project Officer, Asbestos Coordination - NSW EPA

Sally has over 15 years' experience in the waste and resource recovery industry. She worked in the NSW EPA's Waste Compliance Unit before moving to EPA program and strategy work in 2017. She has regulated landfills, compost and resource recovery facilities. Sally has investigated large scale illegal dumping matters, reviewed local and state significant waste planning matters and coordinated the NSW Asbestos Waste Strategy 2019-21. Currently Sally is one of the senior project officers delivering the asbestos remediation project in the Wallaga Lake Aboriginal Community and is a member of the NSW Asbestos Coordination Committee Working Group. Sally holds a BA Arts and a Certificate IV in Government (Investigations).

 
James Green

Carly Hulme - Unit Head, Asbestos Coordination Programs and Innovation Division- NSW EPA

Carly has worked in the NSW Government on waste and environmental issues for over 15 years. With a degree in Environmental Science, she has spent most of her time in environmental policy development and the design and delivery of waste programs. At the NSW EPA, Carly is currently managing the Asbestos Coordination Unit's delivery of the NSW Asbestos Coordination Committees priorities for action.

 

2. The Use of Non-Destructive Methods to Excavate in Contaminated Land

The study is aimed at providing scientific evidence to support the granting of an industry-wide exemption for the application of high-pressure jets on asbestos containing soils, which is currently prohibited. The key findings of the study including the development of safe work procedures and guidelines for the industry, waste disposal and decontamination protocols, and the management of cross-contamination will be discussed in the webinar.

Associate Professor Payam Zekavat

Associate Professor Payam Zekavat - School of Engineering, Design and Built Environment - Western Sydney University

Assoc Prof Payam Zekavat joined WSU in 2017. His research and teaching mainly cover compliance in design and construction. Payam's research is interdisciplinary in the sense that he looks into the prevalent issue of noncompliance from multiple perspectives of policy and statutory requirements, advanced building technologies, as well as safety and professional obligations. Payam collaborates on different projects, all of which are related to policy, sustainability, and compliance in the built environment. He is currently working on projects related to the use of non-destructive methods to excavate in contaminated lands, compliance with building regulations in bushfire-prone areas, and the compliance of modular construction with building regulations. Payam is a qualified architect, project manager, and building certifier.

 

3. ASEA Update: Grants for real time asbestos detection and the National Guide for Asbestos Surveys

The presentation will provide an update on some of ASEA’s ongoing research work. The focus will be on progress in the Business Research and Innovation Initiative (BRII) regulatory technology (‘RegTech’) challenge, following its transition from the feasibility to the proof-of-concept research phase; as well as progress to develop a National Guide for Asbestos Surveys (National Guide).

Dr Georgia Khatib
Dr Georgia Khatib - A/g Director, Research, Data and Policy - ASEA

Georgia has over 7 years’ regulatory and policy research experience in the Australian public sector, focused on the critical appraisal and synthesis of diverse data and information, for risk assessment in the chemicals management context or for informing policy options. This work has delivered recommendations covering work health safety, public health, and the environment. Georgia has a PhD in Medicine and a 15-year career as a medical research scientist, both nationally and internationally, in academia and the pharmaceutical industry.

 

 
Julia Collins

Julia Collins - Director - Awareness and International - ASEA

Julia Collins has 25 years of experience in work health and safety policy and regulation, and previously worked at Safe Work Australia developing the model WHS laws and codes of practice. Her qualifications include a Master of Public Administration and a Graduate Diploma in Safety Science. Julia’s current role includes conducting asbestos awareness campaigns, developing asbestos safety guidance, and supporting international work to progress worldwide asbestos bans.
