The 2024-25 Survey of Aoteaora New Zealand Investors’ Climate Policies and Actions finds progress in net zero commitments and targets for emissions reductions, decarbonisation of portfolios, highlights the perceived drivers for action and barriers, and emerging investment in climate solutions.

Duncan Paterson - Director, Investor Practice
Investor Group on Climate Change

As Director of Investor Practice, Duncan takes on executive responsibility for accelerating climate-aligned investment throughout the membership, and ensuring members are well-equipped with leading tools and knowledge in the rapidly evolving sector.

Through his 25 years in the sector Duncan has undertaken roles including serving as ISS ESG’s global Head of ESG Thought Leadership Program, being the founder and CEO of Australian-based ESG services provider CAER, serving as a director and the chair of the Responsible Investment Association of Australasia (RIAA), serving as a director of the Hong Kong-based  Association for Sustainable and Responsible Investment in Asia (ASrIA), and co-chairing a Technical Working Group in the Australian Sustainable Finance Initiative (ASFI’s) initial Roadmap process.

Duncan holds a Bachelor of Arts from James Cook University, and a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance and Investment from FINSIA.

Barry Coates - Founder and co-CEO
Mindful Money

Barry is the founder and co-CEO of Mindful Money, a charity that aims to make money a force for good. Mindful Money provides transparency to enable the public to find out what companies their KiwiSaver or managed funds are invested in, and helps them to find an ethical fund that fits their values. These free services have been used by over 500,000 Kiwis. Mindful Money is working to influence the flows of investment away from fossil fuels and high emissions towards climate solutions through public education, research, annual surveys and awards. Barry is an economist, with a Masters in Management from Yale University. He has played a leading role in national and international movements on climate change since 1991 After returning to New Zealand in 2003, he was CEO of Oxfam Aotearoa for a decade and briefly a Green Party list MP, before starting Mindful Money in 2018.

Sue Walker - Senior Manager, Responsible Investment
Harbour Asset Management

Sue leads the delivery of responsible investment strategy and policy including the development of stewardship programs and meeting regulatory obligations for Harbour Asset Management. Prior to this Sue worked in the BNZ Sustainability team specialisng in developing business sustainability strategies, sustainable finance frameworks and business opportunities. Sue was a member of the Aotearoa Circle Sustainable Finance Framework technical working group and worked on the development of the Stewardship Code Aotearoa New Zealand.

Prior to that Sue had a long career in financial markets, heading the Investor Sales Global Business Development function at National Australia Bank before moving to a Sales solutions role with a focus on developing investment opportunities for superannuation funds including ESG focused opportunities.

Dennis Turton - Chief Executive, Trust Waikato

Dennis Turton is a seasoned executive with over a decade of leadership at Trust Waikato, where he currently serves as Chief Executive. Born and Raised in Raahui Pookeka (Huntly) and a passionate supporter of the Warriors, he brings both personal connection and strategic insight to his role that reflects the values and aspirations of Waikato communities.

As Chair of Climate Action Aotearoa - The Funders Commitment to Climate Action, Dennis leads sector-wide efforts to embed climate responsibility into funding practices. He also serves on a Board member of the Child Cancer Foundation, where he’s committed to supporting whaanau through life’s most challenging moments.
