Dr Rugo will discuss the emerging treatments and the latest research. Joined by Laura Yammouni, a BCNA Consumer Representative living with metastatic breast cancer.

Ms Vicki Durston serves as the Director of Policy, Advocacy & Support Services at Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA), leveraging over 30 years of health leadership experience. Holding a Master of Education in Leadership Policy and Change from Monash University, Vicki is dedicated to improving quality outcomes for individuals diagnosed with and living with breast cancer. Her initiatives prioritize promoting equity of access for those affected by cancer, as she tirelessly works to enhance the experiences of Australians impacted by breast cancer through BCNA's rigorous advocacy efforts.

Hope S. Rugo, MD, FASCO; Professor of Medicine at University of California; Director of Breast Oncology and Clinical Trials Education at UCSF's Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Centre

Hope S. Rugo is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Hematology/Oncology at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). She is Director of Breast Oncology and Clinical Trials Education at UCSF's Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Centre. Dr. Rugo is an internationally recognized expert in breast cancer. Her research interests include novel therapies for advanced breast cancer, immune modulation to restore chemotherapy sensitivity, evaluation of circulating tumor DNA as a marker of response and resistance to therapy, neoadjuvant therapy, and safety/supportive care. She is a principal investigator of multiple clinical trials and has published widely in medical journals. Dr. Rugo also plays an active role in the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology, the Translational Breast Cancer Research Consortium, ASCO, MASCC, and international guideline committees including NCCN. Dr. Rugo is dedicated to education and mentorship, providing guidance to medical students, residents, and fellows at UCSF and beyond.

Katie-Marie Thorpe, BCNA Metastatic Breast Cancer Lived Experience Reference Group Member

Katie-Marie Thorpe is a member of the BCNA Metastatic Breast Cancer Lived Experience Reference Group, a marketing & design professional, a dog mum, and a young women’s health advocate. Diagnosed with Stage 2 ER+/PR+ Breast Cancer in 2018, she underwent three surgeries, six months of chemotherapy, and 23 rounds of radiation. Despite completing her initial treatment in October 2019, she received a Stage 4 metastatic diagnosis in May 2020 after the cancer spread to her bones.   Celebrating four years of stability on her first line of treatment, Katie continues to work in health advocacy, stay active with regular gym sessions, and support women’s health through various campaigns.
